  Chapter 1

  Watching his girlfriend’s sexy little ass wiggle as she hurried down the hallway and into her bedroom, Nik Evans was sorely tempted to say to hell with their dinner reservations, strip off his clothes, and join her in the shower, but he reluctantly decided against it. Jennifer had been wanting to go to this restaurant for weeks, and if they didn’t go tonight, it could be months before they’d be able to get another reservation.

  Figuring it would take Jennifer at least thirty minutes to get ready, Nik decided to distract himself from thoughts of his naked girlfriend by hopping on the Internet to check the baseball scores. Going over to the kitchen table, he sat down in front of her laptop and clicked on the icon. As he waited for the Internet to connect, he noticed an open Word document on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. His brow furrowed at the title. Her Lover’s Hand by Kylie Blake. His mouth twitched. That had to be one of those mushy, on-line romance novels his girlfriend liked so much. They always had sappy titles like that. Curious, he clicked on the document to maximize it. Who knew? Maybe there’d be some dirty parts to read. He was sure Jennifer wouldn’t mind if he looked at it.

  Nik didn’t know much about romance novels, but this one seemed just as sappy as he’d thought they’d be. Girl meets guy, girl hates guy, blah, blah, blah. He scrolled down the page hoping to get to a good part when he struck gold halfway through the second chapter. Now we’re talking. He continued to read.

  A grin spread across Nik’s face. It seemed his prim, proper librarian had a naughty side he didn’t know about. And he had to admit that all of them were flat-out scorching! Damn, who knew romance books could be so hot? Maybe he should read them more often.

What the hell? Who would sell a book that was halfway done? Maybe it hadn’t downloaded correctly. But as he continued to stare at the screen, another more logical, though altogether shocking, explanation came to him. Maybe Jennifer hadn’t downloaded the book off the Internet; maybe she had written it. Sure, she’d been an English major in college, but could his sweet little librarian write something like this? It would certainly explain why it was in the form of a Word document and not an Internet file.

  He shook his head. No way could his shy, reserved girlfriend ever write anything so provocative. They had been dating for a couple months now, and everything was going really great, but if there was one thing he could say for sure about Jennifer, it was that she wasn’t adventurous in the bedroom. That didn’t mean the sex with her wasn’t fantastic; it was. It was just very vanilla. But maybe she had a naughty side she’d been hiding.

  Even so, the idea that Jennifer had written Her Lover’s Hand did seem a little far-fetched. But Nik had to know for sure. How could he find out, though? It wasn’t like he could just come out and ask her. Still staring at the screen, he drummed his fingers on the table. After a moment, his gaze went to the toolbar on the top on the page. Maneuvering the cursor up to the word, “File,” he clicked first on it, then on the word, “Properties.” His eyes went wide at the name of the author of the document—Jennifer Davidson. That proved him right! It looked like his prim, proper librarian wasn’t so shy after all.

  “I’ll be damned,” he muttered, a grin spreading across his face. His sweetie really was a bad girl!

  Another thought abruptly occurred to him then. If Jennifer had written this book, had she written others as well? As much as he wanted to snoop in her documents folder for other books, he resisted the urge. That would just be wrong. After a moment, his gaze went to the name in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Kylie Blake. If she wrote under a name other than her own, that probably meant she was published, right? And just because he couldn’t search Jennifer’s computer, it didn’t mean he couldn’t Google her pen name. That wasn’t the same thing as snooping, right?

  Minimizing the Word document, he pulled up the Internet, then opened the Google website and typed in the name Kylie Blake. Several websites came up, including one belonging to an “author of erotic romance.” Feeling a surge of excitement, he clicked on the link.

  Any doubts he still might have had about his girlfriend writing those kinds of books disappeared when he saw the picture on the homepage. Though it wasn’t Jennifer, it certainly could have been. The prim, proper librarian sitting on the stool had her blond hair back in a bun and glasses perched on her nose, and the short skirt she was wearing had ridden halfway up her shapely thighs to reveal the tops of her silky stockings. One hand was holding a book, while the other was lifted to her mouth in wide-eyed surprise. She’d obviously just been caught reading a very naughty book.   Tearing himself away from the picture, he clicked on the link marked “Books” and was stunned to discover that Jennifer had written more than a dozen stories. And from what he could tell, they all had spanking of one form or another in them. He was just about to click on one of the books when he heard the bedroom door open. Damn, he’d been so absorbed in what he’d been doing that he hadn’t even realized his girlfriend had finished showering. Quickly closing the Internet, he got to his feet and walked into the living room to meet her.

  Jennifer gave him a smile. “Sorry it took me so long.”

  “I didn’t even notice,” he said, letting his gaze travel over her tall, slender figure. She was wearing a simple sleeveless top and a floral-print skirt that stopped just above the knee, and though the outfit would probably be considered conservative by most, he thought it looked extremely sexy on her. Maybe because he knew that underneath, there was really a bad girl just waiting to get out. “Besides,” he added, “it was definitely worth the wait. You look gorgeous.”

  She blushed at the compliment, murmuring a soft, “Thank you,” and shyly ducking her head as she reached up with one hand to tuck her long, blond hair behind her ear.

  As they drove to the restaurant a few minutes later, Nik tried to concentrate on what Jennifer was saying, but all he could seem to think about was the story he’d read on her computer. The fact that his sweet, demure girlfriend had written all of those sexy spanking scenes had him hard as hell.

  His brow furrowed as another thought suddenly popped into his head. What if Jennifer didn’t just write about spanking? What if she liked getting spanked as much as the characters in her books did?   Jennifer had felt comfortable with Nik right away, though, and the sex had been great between them from the start. Or at least, she thought so. Okay, so maybe she wasn’t qui
te as adventurous in the bedroom as the girls she read about in Cosmo, but she thought she did okay. However, Nik’s behavior tonight seemed to indicate that maybe she was still being a little too tame. Darn it, why couldn’t she be more like the heroines in her books? They never seemed to have a problem holding a man’s interest. And they were never shy in the bedroom. Or anywhere else they had sex, for that matter!

  But as Nik took her hand and pulled her into his arms for a long, slow, intoxicating kiss, Jennifer gradually felt her misgivings begin to disappear. A man didn’t kiss a girl this way if he was going to break up with her.

  When Nik lifted his head several moments later to regard her thoughtfully, however, Jennifer felt some of her unease return. Here it comes. She braced herself.

  “You know,” he said, reaching up to gently brush her hair back from her face. “You kept me waiting quite a long time while you were getting ready earlier.”

  Her brow furrowed, confused at his words. “I did?”

  He nodded. “You did.”

  She felt her face color. “I didn’t mean to. It’s just that I was running late at work, and then I had to stop at the store…” She caught her lower lip between her teeth. “I’m sorry.”

  Nik’s dark eyes were appraising as he studied her. “I’m sure you are,” he said. “But I think you might need something to help you manage your time better so that you don’t do it again, don’t you? Like a spanking, let’s say.”

  Jennifer blinked up at her tall, handsome boyfriend, sure she hadn’t heard him right. “Wh-what?”
